A popular Southern fast-food chain is coming to New Jersey.
Krystal, a regional chain known for hamburger sliders, patty melts, crispy fries, chili-topped hot dogs, glazed donut holes, and waffle chicken sandwiches, will open on Route 22 in Union, NJ.
The restaurant—often seen as a direct competitor to White Castle—was originally slated to open in Paterson in 2021, when former Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz signed on as a partner and franchisee. That location never materialized.
This time, however, the plans appear to be final. Krystal is making a renewed push into the Northeast, and the Union opening appears to be certain.
Construction on the Union Krystal is nearing completion, and can be viewed clearly from Route 22. You can check out the full property listing here.
The fast-food restaurant will feature a dedicated turn lane, drive-thru window, and indoor dining area.
Krystal currently operates 273 locations nationwide, maintaining its status as a regionally relevant, niche fast-food brand. The New Jersey opening could signal a broader expansion strategy.
Krystal was founded in 1932 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the height of the Great Depression. One of its early claims to fame came in the 1950s, when Elvis Presley reportedly ordered 100 sliders to hand out to fans following his first radio appearance. Today, Krystal is headquartered in Dunwoody, Georgia.
The original Krystal slider features a steamed bun, fresh griddled beef, diced onions, yellow mustard, and a pickle. Other popular menu items include hot dogs known as “pups,” chicken nuggets, wings, fried chicken sandwiches, tater tots, and onion rings.
For dessert, the chain offers sugary donut holes called “glaze bombs,” apple turnovers, and mini waffles. Combo options, like the Sackful, contain upwards of 12 sliders.
As of now, it’s unclear whether the New Jersey Krystal will offer any regional or location-specific menu items.
