A legendary South Jersey diner has closed after 50 years. A marijuana dispensary is set to take its place, sparking local debate.
Collingswood Diner served its last plates earlier this month. While many locals are sad to see another classic diner go, owner Jimmy Papandreou tells the Philadelphia Inquirer that he’s retiring and ready for a new chapter.
Since New Jersey legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, dispensaries have multiplied across the state. In Camden County, several have taken over spaces once occupied by now-closed restaurants. In the South Jersey Food Scene Facebook group, members discussed the closure, with many expressing frustration over the diner’s replacement.
Collingswood Diner’s closing coincides with an increase in diner closures across New Jersey since the Covid-19 pandemic. Once abundant, 24-hour diners began to dwindle in the wake of Covid—some shortened hours, while others closed altogether due to increased costs and less customers willing to dine out. According to Papandreou, nearby fast food franchises became difficult to compete with in his final years operating Collingswood Diner.
New Jersey’s history lives in its diners, but that legacy is at risk. In cities like New York, chefs have revitalized vintage diners, keeping their charm while updating menus and experiences.
Could a similar approach save New Jersey’s diner culture? Time will tell. For now, despite closures, the state retains its status as the diner capital of the world.
