A Tri-State Area grocery chain is going viral on social media for an unexpected food creation.

Stew Leonard’s is known regionally as a farm-to-shelf grocery store, highlighting local produce, meats and other staples. The whimsical chain—complete with animatronic singing cows and a maze-like layout—is also famous for wines and hot, ready-to-eat foods. But it’s the ice cream that’s putting Stew Leonard’s in the spotlight right now.

At the front of most Stew Leonard’s locations, just before the “maze” begins, you’ll find a counter serving coffee, ice cream and other treats. Users of the Stew Leonard’s app can even get a free soft-serve cone with each visit.

@stewleonards Stew had to taste test the viral Butter Dipped Ice Cream himself. I mean, after all we are The World’s Largest Dairy Store! If there’s enough interest, we’ll start selling it. You’ve probably heard of chocolate or cherry-dipped cones, but Stew Leonard’s is dipping their ice cream in something far more unusual: butter. That’s right—melted butter and sea salt is the secret combo sending Stew Leonard’s viral.

It’s sweet, lightly salty and, according to fans, addictively delicious. It may sound strange, but is it really? Butter in desserts is nothing new—nor is the sweet-and-salty mix. And with Stew Leonard’s emphasis on farm-fresh dairy, it almost makes sense.

Stew Leonard’s is based in Connecticut, with locations across New Jersey and New York as well. The butter-dipped cone isn’t available at every store yet, but New Jersey is in luck—Clifton just began serving it.

if the trend keeps spreading online, it’s likely only a matter of time before it shows up in every store
