You’re probably familiar with the Keys to New York City. The symbolic gesture is often awarded to notable New Yorkers, celebrities, athletes, and everyday citizens who stand up for their city.
New York’s sheer size and cultural influence make the gift one of the most famous sets of keys in the world. Well, it’s a good thing people say “New Jersey is the world,” because those keys to NYC are made right here in the Garden State.
According to The New York Times, the Keys to New York have been made in New Jersey since 2023. The 125-year-old trophy shop Schoppy’s, located in Atlantic City, is responsible for manufacturing the gold-plated ceremonial honor.
During his single term as New York City mayor, Eric Adams—who was accused of living in New Jersey when filing for office—handed out the Keys to the City numerous times. Billy Joel, Aaron Judge, the New York Liberty, and even Sean “Diddy” Combs, whose keys were later rescinded, are just some of the recipients who were awarded the honor by Adams during his term.
Anyone given the keys from 2023 on is in possession of a New Jersey–made piece of symbolism.
Now, with a new mayor in town, it remains to be seen whether Zohran Mamdani will have a similar knack for awarding the keys as his predecessor. If so, will he continue to employ Schoppy’s in Atlantic City for the job? Or will he move manufacturing closer to home in New York? It’s anybody’s guess.
For now, we New Jerseyans get the privilege and honor of saying this: the Keys to New York are made right here in New Jersey.
