A large tree fell onto a school bus in Tewksbury Township on Friday morning, sending 10 students and the driver to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Fairmount Road East. Photos from the scene showed extensive damage to the front of the bus. Emergency crews transported all 11 individuals to Hunterdon Medical Center, where they were treated and later released.
Tewksbury Township Schools Superintendent Jennifer Shouffler credited the bus driver’s response with preventing more serious injuries. “Due to the excellent skills and calm demeanor of our school bus driver, a potentially disastrous situation was averted,” she said.
The cause of the tree fall remains unclear. Winds were gusting between 30 and 40 mph at the time, according to a weather station in Readington.
Authorities have not disclosed which school the students were attending.
