Paramus police arrested five teenagers late Wednesday night after a high-speed pursuit involving a stolen car that spanned multiple North Jersey towns and ended on the Garden State Parkway, authorities reported.
According to Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti, the incident began around 10:15 p.m. when the Clifton Police Department alerted other agencies about a stolen Kia K500 Stinger. The vehicle was reportedly spotted near the Hackensack and River Edge border, accompanied by a stolen Porsche taken from Maywood earlier that evening.
Police tracked the Kia as it traveled through River Edge, Oradell, and into Hawthorne in Passaic County. Although Hawthorne police attempted to stop the vehicle, it managed to evade them, Guidetti said.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., Paramus Officer Cesar Hurtado observed the Kia entering the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway from Oradell Avenue. Officer Michael Mordaga attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, prompting a pursuit.
The chase continued onto Exit 157 and the Route 20 south ramp, where the Kia eventually collided with a concrete divider and came to a halt. Police arrested all five occupants of the car.
The driver, a 17-year-old from Belleville, faces charges of eluding, possession of stolen property, and aggravated assault with a weapon after allegedly attempting to ram a police vehicle. He was taken to a juvenile detention facility. The four passengers — two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old from Passaic, along with another 16-year-old from Belleville — were charged with joyriding and released to their guardians. Police continue to investigate whether the teens were involved in other thefts.
