Seven schools in New Jersey have been named among the top universities in the world, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings released Tuesday.

The rankings assessed more than 2,250 institutions across over 100 countries. Evaluations were based on research performance and academic reputation, both regionally and globally. Eligible schools had to publish at least 1,250 scholarly papers from 2019 to 2023.

Princeton University led the state, moving up to No. 16 in the 2025 Best Global Universities list. The Ivy League school shares the spot with Cornell University, the University of Toronto, and the University of California, San Francisco.

Rutgers University’s New Brunswick campus ranked 156th. Rutgers-Newark came in at 645th. Other New Jersey schools on the list include the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 873rd, Stevens Institute of Technology at 1,014th, Montclair State University at 1,428th, and Rowan University at 1,882nd.

Harvard University topped the global list, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Cambridge.
