Sean “Diddy” Combs faces another setback in his criminal sex-trafficking case as one of his defense attorneys, Anthony Ricco, filed a motion to withdraw. Ricco, a member of Combs’ six-attorney legal team, submitted the motion Thursday in Manhattan federal court without a specific reason.
In an affidavit, Ricco stated he had provided Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court. However, he emphasized, “Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.” He requested the court to grant his withdrawal, noting discussions with Combs’ lead counsel, Marc Agnifilo. Ricco did not disclose further details but indicated he had sufficient reasons for his request, which he chose not to elaborate on to protect attorney-client privilege.
The court must approve Ricco’s request before it becomes official. A judge will determine if the reasons justify the withdrawal. Ricco assured the court his resignation would not delay the trial, scheduled for May 5, as Combs remains represented by five other attorneys.
Combs, 54, has pleaded not guilty to allegations of coercing women into drugged sex shows and has been detained without bail since his September arrest. If convicted of the top charge, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and up to life in prison.
In addition to the criminal charges, Combs faces at least 40 lawsuits from individuals claiming he drugged and sexually assaulted or raped them. He has denied all allegations.
Combs’ legal team declined to comment on the recent developments, and Ricco has not responded to requests for further information.
