Notice anything strange on your most recent E-ZPass bill?
Thousands of E-ZPass users received incorrect charges earlier this month due to a billing error linked to the New York State Bridge Authority’s commuter plan.
What the company is calling a glitch occurred on October 9 and 10, affecting around 8,000 accounts belonging to New Jersey and New York drivers. The issue arose from a processing mistake by an external vendor handling commuter plan transactions.
The commuter plan offers a discount on tolls for frequent travelers who complete at least 17 trips within a 30-day cycle. Each unused trip normally appears as a $1.40 charge. DUring the time of the error, the unused trips were charged incorrectly, triggering a wave of false deductions.
Refunds are being processed for all affected accounts. Drivers who suspect their statements include errors can reach E-ZPass customer service for verification or account adjustments.
NJ E-ZPass Customers Report Mysterious Charges
On social media, several New Jersey residents reported peculiar charges on their E-ZPass bills. In a Reddit post titled “Can they really do this?” one user revealed a $52.30 charge for a toll that they claim to never have driven through. It is unclear whether this charge was the result of the E-ZPass glitch.
Can they really do that?

Another user posted a notice for 280 E-ZPass violations, which snowballed into a massive $15,699.25 price tag. The bill was received after 2+ years of driving through tolls without paying. This appears to be unrelated to the incorrect charges received by thousands of E-ZPass users this week, but it shows how a bill can pile up when left unaddressed.
Am I cooked?
