Gov. Phil Murphy announced plans to stockpile abortion medication as a safeguard against potential federal restrictions, signaling New Jersey’s commitment to reproductive rights. The move comes ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, alongside GOP control of Congress.

During his State of the State address Tuesday, Murphy vowed to collaborate with Trump on shared priorities but promised resistance on policies that conflict with state values. “I will never back away from partnering with the Trump administration where our priorities align,” Murphy said. “But just as importantly, I will never back down from defending our New Jersey values — if and when they are tested.”

The plan to stockpile mifepristone, a key medication used in abortions, reflects growing concerns among pro-choice advocates over possible federal action. Trump has stated he does not intend to restrict abortion drugs, but his nomination of Pam Bondi as attorney general has raised fears about the revival of the Comstock Act, which bans mailing abortion-related medication.

Murphy’s announcement follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June preserving access to mifepristone nationwide, even as 14 states enforce near-total abortion bans. New Jersey joins other Democratic-led states taking proactive measures to ensure access.

Murphy also called on state lawmakers to pass legislation eliminating out-of-pocket costs for abortion procedures. On X, he emphasized the importance of safeguarding reproductive freedoms, writing, “We must further secure our reputation as a safe haven for reproductive freedom.”

Murphy’s efforts reflects New Jersey’s commitment to protecting abortion access, even as federal policies shift. As the state braces for potential challenges, the governor’s proposals aim to ensure that every resident can access the reproductive care they need without barriers.
