A Central Jersey borough just confirmed plans for a brand new plaza.
Highland Park is getting a pedestrian plaza—and its beloved farmers market is coming with it.
The Highland Park Borough Council unanimously approved the introduction of an ordinance last week that allocates $4.5 million for the South Third Avenue Pedestrian Plaza project, according to NJ.com.
The funding covers design, construction, and infrastructure to convert a section of South Third Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly space, fit for community events, live music, and the longtime staple Highland Park Farmers Market.
It’s a win for a broader policy movement that looks to reimagine cities and towns as places built for walkability and leisure. Advocates—who call themselves YIMBYs—celebrated the decision on social media: “This is inspired from Highland Park,” said one user.
The bond includes $676,000 from a state Department of Community Affairs grant and $324,000 previously appropriated by the borough.
The Highland Park Farmers Market has operated since 1996 and currently runs every Friday from March through December on Raritan Avenue off Main Street. Known for Jersey Fresh produce, homemade breads, fresh-caught seafood, and other local goods, the market is one of Middlesex County’s most well-attended weekly events. “This is a great development in our pathway toward the Third Avenue Plaza,” said Councilman Matthew Hale, chair of the Economic Development Committee, at the June 23 meeting.
A public hearing is scheduled for the next borough council meeting on July 7.
