Jersey City has long been known as one of the most culturally rich places in New Jersey, but a new national demographic study shows its diversity extends well beyond the state. According to WalletHub’s 2026 report on the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, Jersey City ranks second overall, placing it among the most diverse communities in the nation.
WalletHub compared 501 of the largest U.S. cities using three core measures: ethnoracial diversity, linguistic diversity, and birthplace diversity. Each city received an overall ethnic diversity score based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, with Jersey City earning a score of 72.69. Only Germantown, Maryland, ranked higher, with a score of 72.83.
A key factor in Jersey City’s ranking is its unusually balanced population. Unlike much of the country, no single ethnic group holds a majority.
Asians make up the largest share of the population at just over 26 percent, followed closely by Hispanic residents at just under 26 percent. White residents account for about 23 percent of the population, while Black residents make up roughly 19 percent. That near-even distribution helps propel Jersey City to the top of the national rankings.
Language diversity also sets the city apart. According to the study, more than half of Jersey City residents speak a language other than English at home. Spanish is spoken by about 19 percent of the population, while 15 percent speak other Indo-European languages and 12 percent speak Asian or Pacific Islander languages. Those figures rank Jersey City as the third most linguistically diverse city in the country.
Jersey City’s standing as one of the most culturally diverse cities in America also feels symbolic. The Statue of Liberty—one of the nation’s enduring symbols of immigration and freedom—is located within Jersey City’s limits. It’s safe to say the city that houses Lady Liberty has taken her message to heart.
Clifton, Newark, and Trenton also appeared further down the list, reinforcing New Jersey’s reputation as a culturally diverse powerhouse statewide.
