Macy’s is shrinking its footprint in New Jersey.

After a difficult 2025 for brick-and-mortar retail, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring confirmed that two New Jersey locations will close as part of a broader round of nationwide store shutdowns. The closures are part of a plan that will ultimately see the department store chain exit 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026.

Which Macy’s Stores Are Closing in NJ?

The New Jersey stores slated for closure are the Macy’s at Livingston Mall, located at 112 Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston, and the Macy’s at Interstate Shopping Center, located at 225 Interstate Shopping Center in Ramsey. Together, the two locations are among 14 Macy’s stores across the country set to shut their doors in this latest phase.

In a memo sent to employees on Thursday, Jan. 8, Spring acknowledged the impact of the decision on workers and emphasized that the company notified affected staff first.

“These decisions are not made lightly,” Spring wrote. “We communicated directly with affected colleagues first and are providing support, including transfer opportunities where available, as well as severance and outplacement resources where applicable. We thank all those colleagues for their dedication and service to the company.”

Macy’s has framed the closures as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which focuses on trimming weaker locations while redirecting investment toward higher-performing stores, luxury brands, and improvements to its supply chain. The company says the goal is to simplify operations and concentrate on customer experiences that still resonate with shoppers.

“Nearly two years into our Bold New Chapter strategy, the focus of our work remains the same,” Spring said in the memo. “Strengthen our stores, simplify how we operate, and invest in the experiences that matter most to our customers.”

The announcement follows earlier reporting by Fast Company that 66 Macy’s stores were identified for closure in January 2025, signaling that the current move is part of a longer-term restructuring rather than a sudden shift.

For New Jersey, the closures raise familiar questions about the future of traditional mall anchors at a time when consumer habits continue to change. While Macy’s says the strategy is showing signs of progress, the company has not ruled out additional closures as it continues evaluating its national footprint through 2026.
