Something is rattling across the Hudson River, jolting residents from sleep in the middle of the night. But no one seems to know exactly what it is.
For months, residents of Edgewater, Fort Lee, and Cliffside Park have reported mysterious late-night music and booming sounds coming from across the river in Harlem. The blasting noise comes between 11:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekends, making sleep near impossible for some residents.
In February alone, Edgewater police fielded hundreds of complaints about the noise, according to Fox.
The Source Remains Unclear
Police have determined the noise originates from across the Hudson River, somewhere in or around Harlem. Beyond that, the investigation hits a wall.
Some residents are convinced the sound comes from a Harlem nightclub or restaurant with an outdoor lounge. Others point to party boats that travel the Hudson. Still, others propose it could be coming from a different source in Upper Manhattan entirely.
The uncertainty has sparked heated debate on social media. Frustrated residents demand answers in online forums, while officials remain divided on the source—or what to do about it.
The Sound Travels Far and Wide
The science of it makes the mystery more confounding.
Acoustic experts that spoke with Fox note that sound carries significantly farther over water than over land or grass fields. This could explain why it’s so excruciating for New Jersey residents, but less so for Harlem residents across the river.
However, environmental conditions complicate investigations. Wind patterns along the river can distort sound direction, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact source. In urban settings, sound bounces between buildings, further obscuring the origin of the noise.
A Cross-State Problem
The mystery highlights a jurisdictional challenge.
If the noise is coming from Manhattan as expected, then enforcement requires cooperation between New Jersey and New York governments.
New York’s noise ordinances, updated in 2007, limit amplified music to 42 decibels inside homes between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The New York Department of Environmental Protection and NYPD handle enforcement. But, a source would have to be identified before any cooperation between states could occur.
What Residents Are Experiencing
Complaints describe the noise as thumping, vibrating sounds. Much like what you;d experience inside of a club—but not thousands of feet away in a different state. The disruption has left residents exhausted and frustrated.
Edgewater’s mayor acknowledged the problem and suggested party boats as a likely culprit, noting the town has dealt with similar issues in previous years. But without definitive proof of the source, the mystery persists, and action remains delayed.
As investigations continue, the booming mystery across the Hudson remains unsolved. For now, sleep-deprived residents are left to deal with it.
