A strong storm swept through New Jersey on Thursday, bringing wind gusts over 50 mph and heavy rainfall, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without power just before Halloween.

The highest gust reached 57 mph in Sea Bright, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall totals ranged from 1.5 to 4 inches, with Morris County reporting the heaviest amounts. Minor coastal flooding affected parts of the Jersey Shore, with Ocean County under a coastal flood warning Thursday evening and other coastal areas under advisories.

Power outages peaked at more than 4,000 customers Thursday evening, according to data from New Jersey’s four main utilities. As of the latest update Friday, roughly 2,131 customers were reported without power statewide, with the largest concentrations in Morris, Atlantic, and Warren counties, according to PowerOutage.us. The outages coincided with strong winds and heavy rain, which likely contributed to downed trees and power lines.

The storm swept across much of the state Thursday afternoon and evening, leaving scattered outages and gusty conditions in its wake.

Officials continue to monitor conditions as utility crews work to restore electricity to affected areas.
