Every summer, millions of Americans pack up and move, and New Jersey is no exception. According to a new 2025 report from U-Haul, which analyzed one-way rentals between January and July, Garden State residents are on the move, both in and out of the state.

Summer is peak relocation season in the U.S., with nearly half of all household moves taking place between Memorial Day and Labor Day (because who wants to move during a Northeast winter?). As housing costs continue to climb, especially in densely populated areas, affordability is playing a major role in where people choose to go.

In New Jersey, the average monthly rent sits around $2,084, far above the national average of $1,638, according to data. That price gap may help explain why some residents are hitting the road for more affordable states.

Where Are New Jersey Residents Going?

U-Haul’s data, based on one-way truck and trailer rentals, shows a steady outflow of New Jerseyans headed to neighboring and southern states. The most common destinations for outbound moves from the state include:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Florida

These moves suggest that while some residents are seeking lower costs or different job markets, many are still staying within reach of the East Coast.

Who’s Moving Into New Jersey?

Despite the outbound trend, New Jersey continues to attract new residents — especially from nearby regions. People relocating from the following states are fueling the inbound moves:

  • Pennsylvania
  • Massachusetts
  • Connecticut
  • Maryland
  • Virginia

Because New Jersey is part of the broader New York metro area — encompassing parts of New York, Connecticut, and even northeastern Pennsylvania — many of these new arrivals may be relocating for job opportunities or proximity to family while still wanting access to New York City.

New Jersey’s Overall Moving Trend in 2024 and 2025

Last year, U-Haul ranked New Jersey 48th in the nation for overall growth, meaning more trucks left the state than entered. The departure rate stood at 51.9%, compared to an arrival rate of 48.1%. This slow population churn continues into 2025, with outbound moves still slightly outpacing inbound ones.
