A New Jersey State Police detective has been indicted in connection with a high-speed chase that ended in the death of a motorcyclist last year in Burlington County, officials said Tuesday.
Det. Mark Campagna was charged with fourth-degree endangering another person following a grand jury investigation into the June 20, 2023, crash that killed 24-year-old Omar Kebbabi of Astoria, New York.
Authorities said Campagna was off-duty and driving an unmarked State Police vehicle when he began following Kebbabi along Route 206 in Springfield Township. Both vehicles reportedly exceeded 100 miles per hour during the three-mile pursuit. Campagna did not activate his vehicle’s lights or sirens.
At approximately 4:50 p.m., Kebbabi collided with an SUV making a left turn at the intersection of Route 206 and Jacksonville-Jobstown Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver was not seriously injured.
Investigators reviewed commercial surveillance footage and a Springfield police dashcam to reconstruct the events. The Attorney General’s Office said video of the incident has not been released to the public.
Campagna’s conduct was reviewed by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, which investigates any incident involving police and a civilian death. The case was presented to a grand jury, which returned the indictment Monday.
If convicted, Campagna could face up to 18 months in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. His attorney has not publicly commented.
