Extreme heat caused portions of Interstate 287 southbound to buckle on Tuesday, forcing lane closures and delays in Morris County.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the damage was reported around 3 p.m. in two locations. The right lane near Route 23 in Riverdale and the center and right lanes near Brook Valley Road in Montville were affected after metal expansion joints pushed against the concrete road surface, causing it to crack and rise.

Crews made temporary repairs within 90 minutes and reopened limited access using the shoulder as a travel lane.

Overnight, workers replaced rebar and repaved damaged sections. By Wednesday morning, video showed patchwork at the repair sites. One lane remained closed during the morning commute, leading to delays of up to an hour.

All lanes are expected to reopen later today.
