A mild earthquake shook parts of Gladstone, New Jersey, on Friday morning, though no damage or injuries have been reported.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 1.8-magnitude tremor occurred just before noon, roughly four miles west-southwest of Gladstone in Somerset County.

While the Northeast isn’t known for frequent seismic activity, geologists have long been aware of ancient fault lines running beneath the region. Unlike California’s San Andreas Fault, these faults are buried deep and were once believed to be largely inactive.

Last April, a 4.8-magnitude quake rattled Central Jersey, startling residents and causing buildings to shake across multiple counties. Though it sparked widespread conversation, officials reassured the public that there was no serious cause for concern.

Could these recent tremors indicate an emerging pattern? More updates to come.
