Wayfair, traditionally an online-exclusive home goods retailer, is moving into brick-and-mortar retail with a new store nearby New Jersey in Yonkers, New York. The store is part of a broader plan to expand the company’s physical footprint in certain markets across the U.S.
The Yonkers location will span a whopping 114,000 square feet in the Ridge Hill shopping center. The Westchester County Wayfair will include 19 departments covering furniture, décor, outdoor living and home improvement. Many items will be available for same-day pickup, while larger pieces can be ordered for delivery from fulfillment centers in North Jersey.
Wayfair’s goal is to compete with other furniture giants to provide a hands-on shopping experience. The stores allow customers to test furniture, feel fabrics and explore full-room setups before purchasing anything. The Yonkers Wayfair will also offer design services for kitchen, bathroom and full-room projects, along with Wayfair Verified—a curated selection of products vetted for quality and value.
The New York Wayfair follows the company’s first physical location in Wilmette, Illinois. That store attracted roughly 750,000 visitors in its first year alone—half of whom had never shopped at Wayfair online before. Lessons learned at the Illinois Wayfair are being applied to the Yonkers location, including store layout, product curation and staff training.
Wayfair also plans to integrate The Porch—an in-store café offering light meals, soups, salads and handheld items, modeled after the Wilmette café concept. A similar concept can be seen at Ikea, another furniture giant featuring a full-service cafe across most of their U.S. stores.
The store is poised to open in early 2027. Wayfair sees the New York area, including Westchester and nearby New Jersey, as a strategic market for reaching a diverse base of customers.
Wayfair: From Startup to Global Furniture Giant
Wayfair was started in 2002 by Niraj Shah and Steve Conine under the name CSN Stores. The company later rebranded as Wayfair and grew into a global e-commerce leader for furniture and home décor.
Today, Wayfair offers over 14 million products from more than 11,000 suppliers worldwide. Wayfair operates offices and distribution centers in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Ireland, the U.K. and China. The company also manages a family of specialty retail brands, including Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane, and the luxury-focused Perigold. Wayfair’s selection of products caters to a diverse range of styles and budgets, making it the go-to store for many. This global reach gives Wayfair the scale and resources to support its expansion into physical retail while maintaining a robust online presence—the core of their success.
