It’s no secret that property taxes in New Jersey are high. In fact, the Garden State has the highest property taxes in the nation.

Each year, the bills continue to climb. In 2025, the average property tax bill is about $10,000. For comparison, Hawaii, which ranks lowest in the country, has an average bill closer to $2,000. And that statewide average is only part of the story—23 counties report average tax bills that exceed $20,000, according to NJ.com.

Many of the towns with the highest bills are concentrated in Bergen and Essex counties. Even among these already expensive areas, a handful of municipalities stand apart.
