9 Best Places to Travel to Be Alone

It seems like going to crowded tourist destinations like tropical beaches, all-inclusive resorts and packed ski slopes might be out of reach for some time now. Once they open for good, it might be a while before the inevitable deluge of people freshly released from lockdowns will subside. This might be bad news for some people, but we know that there is a different breed of traveler for whom this will never be a problem. Why? Because for some people, the perfect getaway after working in the city, dealing with clients and coworkers, the perfect place to travel is somewhere where they can focus on themselves and stare at the night sky with no one else around.

If it is, we have put together an incredible list of places you can go alone. Or in a small group and enjoy a feeling of solitude, calm and maybe a personal challenge or two. You see, resting takes some hard work sometimes, and it might take hiking the Appalachian Trail, taking a long trek to Machu Picchu, or you might even google when to climb Aconcagua just to feel like yourself again. Here are best places to travel to find solitude that we could find.

Get Lost in the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most exciting places you could visit on your travels to experience solitude. This is the tropical rainforest in the world. The Amazon Rainforest is home to over 2000 different endemic vertebrate species, 20,000 plant species and over 3000 different types of fish. The largest rainforest on Earth, the Amazon Rainforest stretches across a large part of South America, covering three different countries: Brazil, Peru and Colombia.

Trek Mt. Kilimanjaro

One of the most iconic mountains in the world and an undisputed landmark of African mountaineering, Mount Kilimanjaro is an incredible natural feature and an even more incredible climbing destination. Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, with a peak at 19,340 ft and has a great deal of significance in African history. Despite it, Mount Kilimanjaro remains a great location for solitude. A hiking trip to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro can take between 4-20 days. It depends on how many days you spend getting your legs used to the terrain and how many days you spend climbing.

Japan, home to the ancient Samurai warrior code and a quintessentially unique culture, is a beautiful place that is not only popular amongst tourists but also just about any Japanese citizen who can afford it. One of the most densely populated countries in the world, Japan was recently ranked first on an index that measures ‘quality of life’ across countries that have a population of over 10 million people.

Hike Mt. Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp trekking is a great way to experience solitude within a dense human population. Located within the Sagarmatha National Park, Mount Everest Base Camp (17,598 ft above sea level). It offers a spectacular view of the Himalayas and a chance to see Mount Everest. The trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular treks in the world. it is a rewarding experience, to say the least. You get up close and personal with ancient Sherpa culture, meet locals and feel like you are truly walking off the beaten path. If you’re looking for a more challenging experience, Everest Base Camp can also be climbed, but it will be a bit difficult to find any kind of solitude here!

Visit the Grand Canyon

One of the most famous and awe-inspiring destinations in the world, the Grand Canyon is an incredible sight to see on so many levels. Not only does it offer some of the best hiking in North America. It is also home to some of the most peaceful moments you will ever experience. At least if you are looking for isolation rather than just a serene landscape.

Kayak to Puerto Rico’s El Yunque Rainforest

One of the most beautiful natural features in Puerto Rico, El Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest with abundant waterfalls and a great array of different animal species. You get great mountain views, fresh rainwater and an incredible sense of solitude when trekking through this amazing rainforest. It is also possible to kayak along some of Puerto Rico’s best rivers.

Hike Monte Perdido in Spain

Located in Spain’s Pyrenees Mountains, Monte Perdido is a spectacular mountain to hike up. It will give you a great sense of solitude and calmness. The higher you get up this mountain, the more isolated you will feel. There are rarely any other people around you. You can really justify that feeling of utter freedom on top of this incredible mountain. It is one place where you can truly forget about everyday life. Let your mind wander through the grandeur surrounding you. Hiking Monte Perdido is an unforgettable experience so take it from someone who has been there!

Trek Canada’s Bruce Trail

Hiking on Bruce Trail in Canada’s Niagara Escarpment will get you away from high urban density areas. If you’re looking for solitude and serenity without crowds, walking Bruce Trail will be perfect for you! Bruce Trail stretches across Southern Ontario for over 800 km (500 miles) and if you had to pick just one day hike to do out of all 45 hikes, make sure it’s Devil’s Hole hiking trail.
