New Jersey is still shaking snow out of its boots, and already the calendar is pointing toward Sunday.

The last storm hasn’t even fully faded from view. Snowbanks still crowd side streets. Sidewalks feel narrower than they should. In some towns, piles of plowed snow have hardened into gray walls that won’t melt anytime soon. And now, quietly, another winter system is lining up offshore—one that could complicate the weekend all over again.

Forecasters are tracking a storm expected to move up the East Coast late this week, with Sunday, Feb. 1, emerging as the window to watch. Whether it turns into another round of widespread snow or slips past with limited impact remains unclear. What is clear is that the cold isn’t going anywhere.

Temperatures across New Jersey are expected to stay below freezing into next week. That matters, because it means there’s no margin for rain. Any precipitation that falls will arrive as snow, and any snow that falls is likely to stick.

The storm itself is still unsettled. Computer models continue to show a wide range of possible tracks, and small shifts could have outsized consequences. A path farther east could spare much of the state. A late move inland—something New Jersey has seen more than once this winter—could bring accumulating snow, especially in coastal and central areas.

That possibility is keeping coastal communities uneasy. Strong winds are expected regardless of where the storm ultimately tracks, raising concerns about flooding along the Jersey Shore. It’s the kind of setup residents recognize: not an obvious blockbuster, but not something to dismiss either.

The odds of seeing significant snowfall are still relatively low—around 20 to 30 percent for five inches or more—but this is the stage of the forecast where probabilities don’t always bring comfort. Previous storms this season have shifted just enough, just late enough, to turn cautious outlooks into messy realities.

For many New Jerseyans, it’s the waiting that wears you down. Winter storms aren’t just weather events; they disrupt routines, shrink already-narrow roads, and linger long after the flakes stop falling. And with January nearly over, there’s a growing sense that winter is overstaying its welcome.

Forecasters say the picture should become clearer as Sunday approaches. Until then, the state is left in a familiar place—watching the models update, checking the forecast a little too often, and hoping this one stays offshore.

Hope, at this point, feels like a strategy.
