A significant winter storm is expected to move into New Jersey late on Friday, bringing widespread snow, hazardous travel conditions, and winter weather advisories across a majority of the state.
The storm arrives Friday afternoon and evening. It is forecast to intensify overnight, with snow slowing by late Saturday morning. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for northern and northeastern New Jersey, with winter weather advisories farther south.
How Much Snow Will NJ and NYC Get?
Forecasters are predicting between five and nine inches in North Jersey, including the Eastern half that is within the New York City Metro. In Central Jersey, three to five inches, while two to four inches are forecast in South Jersey, where warmer air may bring a mix of sleet and rain.
Timing and Travel Advisories
Snowfall is possible as early as late afternoon on Friday, picking up into the evening and overnight hours. The heaviest snowfall is expected after midnight, where one to two inches per hour is possible.
Commuters should beware of hazardous conditions on Friday evening. Roads are expected to turn slippery quickly as temperatures sit below freezeing for a majority of the storm’s duration.
Emergency management officials have issued travel advisories across the region. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down when on the road, and allow extra time if travel is needed. NJ Transit has warned that service changes are likely, urging riders to check schedules before heading out.
Snow is expected to wind down Saturday morning; however, little melting is expected during most of Saturday due to consistent temperatures below freezing. A separate system is forecast to brig rain on Sunday evening into Monday morning.
