Ready for a new kind of horror movie scenario?
During this weekend’s nor’easter, Long Beach Island residents spotted a shark swimming in the flooded streets near their Surf City home, as seen in a video obtained by ABC News. Thankfully, this was no Great White, but a harmless dogfish—a type of shark without sharp teeth that’s common in the Northeast.
Despite being relatively low-risk, the sharks do possess mildly venomous spines in their dorsal fins as a defense mechanism.
In the video, you hear a woman exclaiming: “Is that a little shark? He’s coming this way!” The dogfish swam up the resident’s street after high tide caused Barnegat Bay to spill over, flooding parts of Surf City on the bay-side of the island with as much as four feet of water, according to New York Post.
Ultimately, the real danger for flooded parts of New Jersey isn’t potential shark encounters, but the flood itself. Officials warn residents to stay away from flooded areas.
Serious flooding was seen across the New Jersey coast this weekend. Some areas experienced levels not seen in nearly a decade.
Others saw sharks.
