There is officially a New Jersey superhero entering the Marvel cinematic universe. The upcoming series, “Ms. Marvel,” follows a Pakistani-American teenage girl who lives in Jersey City.
Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, idolizes the Avenger Captain Marvel, like many modern-day teenagers. In the recently released trailer, audiences see Khan attending high school, navigating friendships, family and even her going to her mosque. While handling the typical excitements and worries that come with being a teenager, Khan must also learn to harness superhero powers. These powers come upon acquiring a bracelet that resembles the one Captain Marvel wears. Iman Vellani portrays the first Muslim superhero in the Marvel universe.
In the trailer, Khan dons Marvel superhero attire. Ever the daydreamer, Khan is knocked out of an extensive daydream by her school guidance counselor while sitting in his office.
The powers that Khan eventually acquires allow her to launch energy blasts and create stepping stones in the air for her to walk on. This character is based on the superhero in the Marvel comics.
Marvel Superhero Makes History on the Screen and in the Comics
The comics introduced Kamala Khan in 2013. The Pakistani-American teenager-turned-superhero received her own solo comic series in 2014. This made her the first Muslim superhero to have her own series within the Marvel comic books.

The series was to premiere in late 2021. However, due to the pandemic, the Marvel calendar was flooded with nine other superhero films and series. Now, the series will air around the release of “The Marvels,” the sequel to “Captain Marvel.” Vellani will appear alongside Brie Larson in the film. The movie will premiere in Feb. 2023.
In the trailer, Khan tells a friend, “It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City that save the world.” However, to girls all over the world, looking for superheroes that look like them, Khan really is saving the world.
“Ms.Marvel” will be a six-episode series that will debut June 8, 2022, on Disney+.
