Black Rail in the Digest Lunchbox

In an area of commuters, traffic, and hectic schedules, sometimes all one needs is a great cup of coffee. And a sandwich. Luckily, Black Rail Coffee provides both, whether in-store or on the go, and even luckier for us, Black Rail stopped by the Digest office to provide our weekly lunch box with some of their favorites, and we were nothing short of delighted (and full).

Black Rail Coffee opened in April 2014 on Jackson Street in Hoboken, a convenient location for the residential area, and the commuters on the Light Rail Station. With their signature offering of course being coffee, Black Rail is known for their iced coffee in particular, and the workers of Black Rail suggest everyone holds the milk and sugar and tries the coffee black to really experience the unique flavors. In addition to coffee, the shop also offers teas, pastries, and pressed sandwiches, with something for everyone.

In this week’s lunchbox, we were served up tray of Black Rail’s famous black iced coffee, as well as their equally famous Avocado Toast, with olive oil, lemon juice, red pepper flakes and feta cheese on seven grain bread. We were also served the option with smoked salmon on top. Another brunch favorite was the yummy Money Honey, with peanut butter, banana, bacon, honey, and rosemary on brioche. (I feel like Elvis would have been a fan of this one).

We also got to taste the Turkey Meets Ham, with oven roasted turkey, black forest ham, sweet peppers, swiss cheese, and cornichon mayo on ciabatta bread. There was also the Wasa Beef, a spicy and tasty blend of roast beef, arugula, swiss, red onions, and wasabi mayo on rosemary focaccia bread. Then there was a vegetarian option, (equally delicious for meat eaters), named Where’s The Meat? with balsamic dressed portobello mushrooms, arugula, roasted red peppers, and fontina cheese on rosemary focaccia bread. We also tried The Healthier Sandwich, with oven roasted turkey, avocado, red onions, spinach, and fresh carrots with balsamic dressing on seven grain bread.

Three more crowd favorites were the Turkey Meets Jam, with oven roasted turkey, fig jam, pickled onions and gruyere cheese on ciabatta bread and the Pretentious Piggy, with black forest ham, granny smith apples, honey dijon and spinach on pressed sourdough bread. Their new signature sandwich, the Sandwich of the Month, had seasonal strawberries, turkey, spinach, onions, sliced almonds, honey, brie cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. Sounds like summer doesn’t it?

Whether it be for their coffee or sandwiches, Black Rail does not disappoint with any of their delicious options. Thank you for filling our lunchbox, and we’ll be sure to see you again very soon!
