The law is a system of rules that a country or state puts in place and enforces through their government. We understand why certain laws are set in place and know that most of them are for our own protection. But some laws I have come across are not very legitimate.  Here’s our list of crazy laws in NJ.

In Bernards Township – It is illegal to frown as the town is a “Frown-Free Town Zone”.

In Blairstown – It is illegal to throw ashes on the sidewalk.

In Caldwell – You may not dance or wear shorts on the main avenue.

In Cranford – Citizens are not permitted to park their own boat on their lawn.

In Cresskill – All cats must wear three bells to warn birds of their whereabouts.

In Elizabeth – It is forbidden for a woman, on a Sunday, to walk down Broad Street without wearing a petticoat.

In Haddon – Cross-dressing is illegal.

In Manville – It is illegal to offer whiskey or cigarettes to animals at the local zoo.

In Mount Laurel – Climbing trees is prohibited in all city parks.

In Newark – It is illegal to sell ice cream after 6pm, unless the customer has a note from his doctor.

In Raritan – Profanity is prohibited.

In Sea Isle City – There will be no boiling of bones on the property.

In Trenton – Pickles are not to be consumed on Sundays.

Motorists used to handling the pumps at gas stations could be in for a shock when pulling in for a top-up at any station in New Jersey. That’s because it’s illegal for drivers there to pump their own gas. Only gas station employees can pump gas in the Garden State — what’s known as “full-service”. The controversial law was passed in 1949 after lawmakers felt it was too dangerous to have untrained drivers pumping their own fuel.
