Officials in Morris County launched an investigation after drones hovered over several towns on Monday night. Law enforcement officers on patrol reported the activity, which sparked widespread speculation on social media. Authorities are working to uncover the drones’ origin and purpose.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the reports on Tuesday. Officials noted multiple drones in the area but assured the public that no threats to safety exist. Patrol officers observed the drones, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) found no evidence of activity in the region.
Local and federal agencies are collaborating to address the issue. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the Office of Emergency Management, municipal police departments, and state and federal law enforcement have joined the effort. Authorities have not identified the operators or clarified the reason behind the drones’ presence.
Residents shared their experiences online. One resident reported three drones flying low over Mendham, Chester, and Randolph around 6:30 p.m., circling for over an hour. Another noted that the Rockaway Facebook forum contained multiple videos and pictures of the drones, sparking concern among users.
Live Storm Chasers, a weather-focused Facebook group, claimed to observe five unauthorized drones. The prosecutor’s office did not verify the number but addressed misinformation circulating online.
“This joint statement is being issued in response to rumors about the drone activity spreading on social media. We encourage the public to be mindful that what they read online may not be accurate,” the office said.
Drone operators in New Jersey must follow FAA regulations and local flight restrictions. Legal use requires certification, and certain areas, including airports and populated zones, remain off-limits.
Authorities encouraged residents to report any information directly to their local police departments and reminded them to reserve 911 calls for emergencies.
The investigation continues as officials work to identify the operators and the drones’ purpose.
