Pita Pit in The Digest Lunchbox

Even in the age of cold pressed juices and kale salads, the words ‘healthy’ and ‘fast food’ don’t usually go hand and hand. Fast food usually contains something greasy, heavy, or carb-loaded, while healthy food can burn a hole in your pocket.

Pita Pit, however, has mastered fast food with a healthy state of mind, that goes beyond the typical sandwich and salad. The restaurant franchise opened in Canada in 1995 and has locations everywhere from California to New York, with the first one in New Jersey opening just two weeks ago on Washington Street in Hoboken. The new local shop creates handcrafted pita wraps packed with fresh meats, vegetables and cheeses, classic salads loaded with veggies, and express lunches for the office, with both drinks and a cookie. This week, the Digest was lucky enough to taste a few of Pita Pits yummy options.

Pita Pit in The Digest LunchboxSitting in a pita platter were classics like Turkey, Ham, and Caesar, and different takes on wraps like the Chicken Crave, which included chicken breast, black forest ham, lettuce, onions, cheese, and honey dijon, the Dagwood, which is stuffed with turkey, ham, prime rib, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cheese and horseradish dijon, and the Chicken Souvlaki, full of mediterranean seasoned chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, spinach, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce. We also tried the Falafel, a classic middle eastern snack made of chickpeas, fava beans, or both. The pita was also full of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives, feta, and tzatziki. All were wrapped in fresh, whole wheat pita wraps.

Pita Pit in The Digest LunchboxIn the middle of the wrap party was a hummus filled green pepper, surrounded by crispy homemade chips cut from pita wraps. Both the hummus and chips were fresh and delicious, the chips being large enough to scoop a good amount of hummus on (a major quality in our book).

After finishing our pita platter, we didn’t feel weighed down or sluggish, just happy, healthy, and most importantly, full. Thank you, Pita Pit, and welcome to the neighborhood!
