by Daniela Marin

When looking for the perfect getaway it can be hard to pick a place. Let alone for families—everyone wants something different. Even if you plan on going with a partner, friends, or on your own, choosing a weekend getaway can be tough. New Jersey is full of life, but everyone wants to get away from the hustle and bustle once in a while. Relaxation is what most look for while on a small trip, and Upstate NY has just that.

Whether you love nature, are a shopaholic, or are a true lover of live music, Upstate New York has something for just about anyone.

In the summer, Callicoon and North Branch are must-visits, offering breathtaking views nestled in the beautiful scenery of the Southwestern Catskills.

Things to Do in Callicoon

In the summertime, Callicoon and North Branch are perfect because they’re right near the Delaware River. This is great for anyone who wants to swim, collect little stones for arts and crafts,or go fishing. It’s important to know that if you go fishing, you need a fishing license. For kids under 12, it’s not necessary to have a fishing license, so long as they are accompanied by someone who does.

A picturesque spot is the Stone Arch Bridge, and it has some major history to it. It was built back in 1880 by Henry and Philip Hembdt. The landmark was a key bridge to connect Old Newbugh Cochemton to Callicoon Valley. Today, it still stands in all of its glory— with tables and running water nearby for a perfect picnic area.

Just a 20-minute drive from North Branch, there is the Museum at Bethel Woods that features some of the icons that were once at Woodstock. They also show a short film about the legendary concert. It’s a wonderful stop to learn a bit about the greats and for music lovers who would like a trip to the past.

Another short drive destination is a farm, Buck Brook Alpacas in Roscoe. The farm is beautiful. They offer tours, alpaca petting, gem mining, and many sell many items that are made with their alpaca wool. They also recently unveiled relaxing alpaca yoga which has been a popular hit.

Callicoon and North Branch aren’t just about views and retro shopping that can be done in the charming towns. There are plenty of great dining options in and around the area. Some of the places to eat would be Black Walnut, Callicoon Hills, and Seminary Hill. Black walnut is a bit of a newer place.

Black Walnut is a one-stop shop. It’s much more than just a place to eat and bar, but a place to look around for some home goods, too. Each piece is made with locally sourced materials. Black Walnut has a unique interior style.. Enjoy the great quality food and find your next new statement piece.

Callicoon Hills is perfect for a stay offering peace and tranquility. With nature spots and lovely hammocks to enjoy the countryside. They serve brunch lunch and dinner at the Conover Club thursday-sunday. Callicoon Hills has activities full for a relaxing getaway retreat having yoga and many more activities to join in on. One can have a soothing day at the pond on a hammock or playing cornhole. When the sunset touches down and the stars sprinkle the sky, s’mores are offered around a warm campfire. Callicoon Hills gives a perfect home away from home feeling. There are saunas around the area and a pool if the river isn’t quite your style.

Seminary hill, you can really appreciate and take in the whole scenery. That’s what elevates the experience at Seminary Hill. Even if you’re stopping by to get some cider, it makes it all the more beautiful before sunset to watch the stars. The lovely thing about North Branch is that the night sky  is beautiful, offering crystal-clear views. Especially if you’re coming from Jersey, you will really appreciate the clarity as the stars dance along the sky—each shining brighter than the other.

Photographs don’t capture the kind of beauty that is to be discovered in the southwestern Catskills. This weekend getaway is amazing for just about anyone.
