Ready for winter? The NJ weather seems to be.
A harsh cold front will sweep through New York and New Jersey early Tuesday morning, bringing the first major freeze of the season. Temperatures will drop near or below freezing as wind chills push into the teens, creating dangerous conditions across the Tri-State Area.
The freeze warning takes effect at 1 a.m. Tuesday and lasts until 9 a.m. Gusty winds, reaching 30 to 40 mph, will make it feel colder than the registered temperature. Drivers and commuters are advised to allow ample time to warm up cars and clear frost from windows.
Temperatures are expected to dip to around 30 degrees in some areas, with wind chills between 25 and 35 degrees. Potted plants and sensitive vegetation should be moved indoors or covered to prevent any frost damage. Outdoor pets should be brought inside. Residents are advised to leave faucets dripping in unheated areas to protect water pipes, and to open cabinet foors to allow for warm air circulation.
It’s a sharp change from Monday’s mild weather, which saw highs in the mid-50s under cloudy skies with scattered showers. The Arctic blast moving in will keep highs in the low 40s on Tuesday despite sunshine, with a chance of light flurries mid-morning.
The rest of the week will warm up. Wednesday and Thursday bring highs in the upper 40s to low 50s, with overnight lows still in the 30s. By the weekend, highs should reach the low 50s under mostly dry conditions.
Residents across New Jersey and NYC should prepare for sub-freezing temperatures. The freeze warning signals a period of hazardous conditions.
