New Jersey Braces for Major Snowstorm as Salt Shortage Raises Concerns

New Jersey is bracing for its most serious winter storm of the season.

Forecast confidence is climbing quickly. Snow arrives early Sunday morning, intensifies throughout the day, and may linger into Monday. Winter Storm Watches are in place for most of the state. Forecasters expect a high-impact storm with widespread travel disruptions, delays, and double-digit snowfall potential.

Timing, Snowfall, and What to Expect

Saturday will be cold, with temperatures stuck in the teens. Because of the freezing temperatures, any snow that falls late Saturday night is expected to stick instantly.

Snow will spread statewide into Sunday morning, with periods of moderate to heavy snowfall throughout the day. At least six inches is likely across New Jersey—parts of the state could see a foot or more. Impacts remain severe.

Sunday is not the day for traveling—it is recommended to stay home unless absolutely necessary. Monday morning delays are likely.

Expect Major Disruptions

This storm is expected to bring:

  • Snow-covered and icy roads
  • Hazardous driving conditions
  • Flight delays and cancellations
  • School closures
  • Power outages

With sub-freezing temperatures lingering into next week, roads may remain icy days after the storm passes.

NJ Salt Shortage

To make matters worse, New Jersey is experiencing salt shortages in parts of the state. As the storm approaches, salt is becoming increasingly hard to find.

Hardware stores report empty shelves, buy limits, or no supply at all. Some are selling sand as a backup. The problem extends beyond individual use—some towns are reporting supplies low enough to treat only major roads and intersections.

Local officials say towns are last in line for deliveries, behind state and county crews. That means fewer pre-treated roads, slower response times, and untreated surfaces during the storm.

What This Means for Drivers and Residents

With low salt supply and consistent freezing temperatures, expect slick roads, refreezing overnight, and hazardous conditions even after plowing.

Stay off the roads Sunday and Monday if possible. If you have salt at home, use it sparingly and focus on targeted areas for conservation.

This storm is shaping up to be a big one. Take this as your sign to get prepared.
