Summer officially ends today, and the weather forecast wants you to know it. New Jersey could see its first significant storm of the season this weekend.
A coastal storm forming off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia between Wednesday and Thursday could turn into the season’s first nor’easter.
As the storm approaches New Jersey and New York between Thursday and Friday, conditions are expected to intensify—with the brunt of the storm predicted to hit over the weekend. At this point, the track of the storm is still uncertain.
The Forecast
Forecasts disagree slightly on timing, location, and impact.
ABC News reports that the storm may track east of NYC, leaving New Jersey with breezy rain—spared from the worst. However, an AccuWeather forecast suggests that rain and 30-40 mph winds will reach New Jersey directly.
These conditions could also bring floods to the coast, as the storm combines with a full moon and high tides. By Thursday, waves could reach up to 10 feet across Sandy Hook and Long Island.
Other Effects
Regardless of how the storm tracks, beach erosion is expected—with the severity depending on which track it takes. Additional things to look out for include flight disruptions (specifically between NYC and Boston) and potential power outages along the NJ coast.
Though often associated with snow, nor’easter refers to wind direction. The coastal storms are most common between the months of September and April.
