Good entrepreneurs make sales. The best entrepreneurs go out and find them.
That’s what one New Jersey Girl Scouts troop showed when they had the brilliant idea to set up shop outside Daylite Cannabis in Mount Laurel in February. Genius, right? What better way to guarantee cookie sales than to go directly to the destination where hundreds of people leave each day with a bag full of legal marijuana, THC-infused gummies, vaporizers, and more.
Ever hear of “the munchies”? The ravaging hunger that overcomes someone under the influence of marijuana. It’s not a feeling I’d be familiar with—I’ve just heard rumors from others who do that stuff. Not me, though. Couldn’t be me. Never.
And the munchies are real. According to a Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study, vaporized cannabis with THC—which is especially popular today—dramatically increases food intake within 30 minutes in humans and 60 minutes in rats. Cannabis increases how much people eat, regardless of dose, gender, or food type, by overriding the body’s natural fullness signals. It’s a brain-mediated response that essentially hijacks your ability to tell if you’re full.
So the munchies are a real thing, and this troop is genius for selling cookies outside a dispensary. But the Girl Scouts of the USA aren’t necessarily thrilled. According to Fox, the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey rejected the idea in 2024 but allowed one troop to try it this year.
The experiment was a massive success. Cookie sales were abundant, and the partnership benefited both the Girl Scouts and Daylite Cannabis. The troop went viral online, resulting in a mix of support and scorn. Several users praised the troop for their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Despite the success, they reportedly will not return to capitalize on more hungry cannabis buyers.
