The Astrology of Gemini Season in 2021

Kaitlyn De Leonardis

Gemini season has a lot going on this year, which is oh-so fitting for this active air sign. Two major events will define this current astrological season. The first is Mercury’s retrograde on May 29 and the second is the solar eclipse on June 10, both occurring in this mutable sign and putting a cosmic emphasis on Gemini season 2021.

Gemini Season 2021

As the closest grouping of celestial bodies in our solar system, Mercury, Venus and the Sun basically travel in a flock. While the Sun dictates the astrological season by the sign it’s currently occupying, Venus and Mercury are typically close by, either in the same sign or in the neighboring ones. This really constitutes an “astrological season,” as the sign is receiving and applying the energy of these planets around the same time.

Right now Venus and Mercury are in the lead, with the Sun entering Gemini on May 20. Gemini season 2021 is about to get extra, because Mercury is not f*cking leaving. For the remainder of May, the whole gang is in Gemini. That is, until Venus becomes the leader and moves into Cancer on June 2. With the North Node of Destiny currently residing in Gemini, the solar eclipse on June 10 will bring about an optimistic new beginning. The mutable energy is off the charts, with a highly influential Gemini season and Jupiter’s recent move into Pisces. We are all going through major shifts, learning to better balance the duality of the Gemini archetype that’s in all of us.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini 2021

Mercury will go retrograde in Gemini on May 29, extending its stay at home until July 11. Its backwards motion will last from May 23 to June 22. This particular retrograde is bound to make the day-to-day a little more challenging than usual. Gemini is the traditional ruler of the third house and frustrations with communication, transportation and community are common themes. Technology problems, minor accidents, neighborhood drama and social faux pas are likely at this time. It’s important to stay alert and be aware of your environment with Mercury retrograde in Gemini.

All of the 2021 Mercury retrogrades are happening in air signs, meaning there is a collective focus on intelligence and how we utilize it through our relations with others. This transit is kind of like a learning process in itself. The whole purpose is to reflect so we don’t repeat the same mistakes. Mercury retrograde essentially makes whatever we’ve been sweeping under the rug impossible to ignore.

When we let things slide or tuck them away in the corners of our minds, not only do the problems not get solved, they fester. This can happen on an inner level too, as we might have a sudden shift in perception or want to change the way we relate to ourselves. Mercury in Gemini is extremely savvy and during this retrograde and its shadow period, we are learning to make better judgments. During this retrograde we’ll have to take a deep look at what doesn’t work anymore, so we can head in the direction of our true North.

Solar Eclipse in Gemini 2021

You can’t talk about the eclipse without talking about the lunar “Nodes of Fate,” also commonly referred to as the North Node of Destiny and the South Node of Karma. They are not objects but specific points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic, linking them to the lunar and solar eclipses. In astrology, eclipses are thought to be powerful and life-altering. The nodes remain on a specific axis for about a year and half, typically sticking around for three eclipse seasons. The effects of an eclipse impacts us for six months, or until the next set of eclipses.

While the North Node is in Gemini, the South Node is in Sagittarius. Since they operate on an axis, they will forever be in opposition. The Gemini-Sagittarius eclipses in the winter of 2020 were the first set to fully occur on this axis. Making the Gemini season eclipses of 2021 a critical point in the current cycle. This winter’s eclipse season, the North Node will be at the first degree of Gemini but the lunar eclipse will take place in Taurus. Meaning the solar eclipse on June 10 is the last one to occur in Gemini.

Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on May 26, 2021

Around the lunar eclipse in Sagittarius on May 26 we will be releasing ties to the past and resolving karma. Think of it as a call to let go of our crutches and stand on our own two feet. This will prepare us for the solar eclipse in Gemini on June 10. These eclipses may encourage us to embrace our intelligence, creativity and expression along with our shadow sides, bringing harmony to our inner-self. The solar eclipse in Gemini will present a grand opportunity that opens the door to our destiny. Combined with Jupiter in Pisces, there is luck in the stars and the right place, right time scenarios will be abundant. Mercury will be present during the eclipse and in conjunction with the Sun. This gives us the ability to find balance between our hearts and our minds. Yes, good things can happen, even when Mercury’s in retrograde.
