The Papermill Playhouse’s production of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby is a must-see for fans of the book and theater alike. The show is visually stunning, with lavish costumes and sets that transport the audience to the sights and sounds of the Jazz Age. The cast is top-notch, with each actor bringing their character to life in a memorable way.

The show follows the story of Nick Carraway, a young man who moves to Long Island in the summer of 1922. Nick soon finds himself drawn into the glamorous world of his wealthy neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a mysterious figure who throws lavish parties but never seems to be happy. Nick eventually learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan, a woman he knew before the war.

The show’s biggest strength is its cast. Jeremy Jordan is outstanding as Gatsby, capturing the character’s charm and vulnerability perfectly. Eva Noblezada is also excellent as Daisy, bringing a depth and complexity to the role that is often missing in other adaptations of the novel. The supporting cast is very strong, with particular standouts from John Zdrojeski as Tom Buchanan and Noah J. Ricketts as Nick Carraway.

The show’s visuals are also very impressive. The scene and projection design by Paul Tate dePoo III is particularly noteworthy, with its lush gardens and Art Deco mansions. The costumes by Linda Cho are just as stunning, perfectly capturing the fashion of the Jazz Age. Each of these factors works in tandem to transport the audience to the iconic era.

Overall, The Great Gatsby at Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ is a well-made and enjoyable production. It is a must-see for fans of the book and theater alike. Where other adaptations of The Great Gatsby often miss the mark, Papermill’s production excelled, serving as excellent entertainment for superfans of F. Scott Fiszegerald’s iconic novel, or newcomers who have never even read a page. Whether you’re a bookworm, a theater fan or both, The Great Gatsby should be at the top of your list
