Chef Gordon Ramsay’s hit show Hell’s Kitchen debuts with its 23rd season tonight and you might notice a familiar face from the NJ dining scene as one of this season’s contestants.

Joe Tartamella, the Executive Chef of Felina Restaurants (Ridgewood, Summit and Jersey City), makes his TV debut as a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen. The shooting took place over the course of three weeks earlier this year.

We named Felina Ridgewood as one of NJ’s best restaurants in 2023

Tartamella, who has been professionally cooking for almost two decades, describes the experience as “life changing,” citing the level of competition and the ability of the show to force him outside of his comfort zone.

In a preview clip of the season, Tartamella (who competes on the Blue Team) can be heard claiming “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” giving an insight into the drama that can be expected. Right after, a clip plays of Ramsay giving orders to Tartamella: “You’re a good f****** cook. Compose yourself!”

Additionally, Tartamella formed a close bond with a chef from the opposing team, Chef Whitney Thomas, who he brought on to the opening staff of Felina at the Albion in Summit, which opened just this month. Tartamella touts Chef Thomas for her fierce competitiveness and culinary poise.

Season 23 of Hell’s Kitchen debuts tonight at 8 p.m on Fox. Episodes stream the next day on Hulu each week.
